What Gideon finds when trade documents don’t agree
A commercial invoice, packing list and bill of lading, checked against each other. Three planted discrepancies, written up the way Gideon's report would present them.
This is a manually prepared, illustrative example of the report format Gideon produces after reading a trade document pack — here, a synthetic commercial invoice, packing list and bill of lading built specifically to contain three planted errors. It was written to match Gideon's report style; it is not the output of an actual Gideon run. Nothing below is a real transaction. It exists so you can see the report format and the level of detail before you send Gideon a real pack.
Summary
The three documents were compared field by field, the way Gideon compares a document set. Three discrepancies were planted and all three are surfaced below. Each document reads correctly on its own — none is individually malformed — but they do not agree with each other. This is the pattern Gideon is built to catch: consistency across a document set, not just correctness within one document.
Discrepancies
1. Shipper / seller name does not match across documents
| Document | Field | Value |
|---|---|---|
| Commercial Invoice | Seller | Meridian Commodities Pte Ltd |
| Packing List | Seller | Meridian Commodities Pte Ltd |
| Bill of Lading | Shipper | Meridian Commodity Trading Pte Ltd |
The entity named as shipper on the Bill of Lading is not the same legal name as the seller on the Invoice and Packing List. This could be a related entity, a clerical error, or a sign the B/L was issued by a different party than the one contracted. Confirm which entity holds the contract and verify both names against the relevant company registry.
2. Quantity mismatch between Invoice and Packing List
| Document | Quantity |
|---|---|
| Commercial Invoice | 500.000 MT |
| Packing List (net) | 480.000 MT |
| Bill of Lading | 500.000 MT |
The Packing List understates the cargo by 20 metric tons (4%) against both the Invoice and the Bill of Lading. Two of three documents agree at 500.000 MT, which points to the Packing List as the likely source of the error — but that should be confirmed with the seller, not assumed.
3. Shipment date conflicts with Bill of Lading on-board date
| Document | Field | Value |
|---|---|---|
| Commercial Invoice | Shipment Date | 11 September 2026 |
| Bill of Lading | Shipped on Board | 09 September 2026 |
The Invoice states the goods shipped two days after the Bill of Lading was already issued confirming the goods were on board. A B/L cannot be issued before loading occurs, so one of these two dates is wrong. Confirm the actual loading date with the carrier or port agent.
What this report does not do
Gideon flags what does not reconcile and tells you exactly where to look. It does not verify entities against a company registry, confirm certificate authenticity with an issuing body, or replace a human sign-off. Items marked High above should be independently checked before funds move.
